Natural disasters can have significant impacts on communities, infrastructure, and local economies. A Disaster Mitigation Plan helps reduce these impacts by identifying potential hazards and implementing strategies to lessen future risks before disasters occur. Mitigation measures protect lives, safeguard property, and strengthen community resilience. They are also a financial investment. Studies have shown that every $1 invested in hazard mitigation saves an average of $6 in future disaster costs. At the request of local jurisdictions in Summit, Utah, and Wasatch counties, MAG developed this regional plan to help participating communities prepare for natural hazards such as earthquakes, wildfires, flooding, severe weather, and landslides. The plan identifies local risks, establishes mitigation priorities, and outlines actions that can reduce future damage. Participation in the Disaster Mitigation Plan also helps jurisdictions maintain eligibility for Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) hazard mitigation grants and certain post-disaster funding opportunities, providing valuable resources for projects that improve community safety and resilience.
Mountainland Association of Governments (MAG), in partnership with Utah County and Wasatch County, is currently updating the 2022 Pre-Disaster Mitigation Plan. This planning effort identifies natural hazards, assesses community risks, and develops strategies to reduce future impacts and improve regional resilience.
The planning process began with stakeholder kick-off meetings in June 2025 to introduce the project and gather input from local partners. A second round of stakeholder meetings, focused on reviewing hazard profiles and identifying mitigation strategies, was held on the December 8th, 2025. Project updates, public meeting information, and planning documents will be posted here as they become available.
