Congestion Management Process

The Congestion Management Process (CMP) is a tool to support the development of the Regional Transportation Plan (RTP) and the Transportation Improvement Program (TIP). The CMP identifies strategies to reduce congestion and optimize traffic operations, often without expanding highway capacity.

Implementing the CMP will contribute to an efficient and effective transportation system, increased mobility and accessibility, and maximized utility from constrained resources.

How CMP guides transportation investments

The Congestion Management Process (CMP) helps MAG identify where congestion occurs, understand travel patterns, and evaluate strategies that improve mobility across the region. The information gathered through the CMP directly supports regional transportation investment decisions by helping prioritize projects and strategies that improve system performance.

CONGESTED DASHBOARD

This dashboard features a map that shows travel time index, % congested, and truck travel time reliability. It shows an overall view of congestion for major roads by year and by city.

ROUTE DETAILS

This dashboard also displays congestion metrics, but is best for looking at specific routes. Its charts show change in congestion over time and by time period.

CMP COMPARISON DASHBOARD

This dashboard compares congestion metrics by city by selecting the year, metric, and time period.

MAG TRANSIT DASHBOARD

This dashboard shows average transit (bus/rail) ridership by city and by route over time.

ACTIVE TRANSPORTATION DASHBOARD

This dashboard displays maps and metrics about bike lanes, paved trails, and trail counters. Charts on the bottom of the dashboard can be toggled to view additional statistics.

PREVIOUS CMP

This earlier CMP documents provide historical analysis, regional trends, and prior congestion management strategies.
